July 1 marks one year since the Ageing and Disability Commission was established. The Commissioner would like to thank everyone who made the time to meet with him and his team, and who supported our work to promote and safeguard the rights of older people and adults with disability so they can live free from abuse in their family, home and community.
This time last year, I sat down as the first Ageing and Disability Commissioner for NSW. I am proud of what we have delivered in a short space of time, and am constantly motivated by the drive and ambition we collectively share to make NSW a safer place for older people and adults with disability, and ensure they live free from abuse in their family, home and community.
In the past year, we have made significant progress in our mission. We tabled our first report to NSW Parliament, which provided recommendations on how the State can deliver a more effective model of advocacy for people with disability in NSW. We also established the Ageing and Disability Commission Advisory Board, and with two meetings already held I am confident this Board will support the Commission to improve the lives and outcomes of older people, adults with disability, their families and informal carers. Importantly, both myself and my team have had invaluable meetings with service providers, advocates, government agencies, members from the Elder Abuse Prevention Collaborative's and with multicultural and Indigenous communities across all parts of NSW. We sat, we listened and we heard first hand your experiences and views on how we can make real change and support everyone to take action against abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people and adults with disability.
We could not have come this far without you. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me and my staff over the past year.
Finally, thank you to the Department of Communities and Justice, The Hon. Gareth Ward MP, Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services, and The Hon. Geoff Lee A/Minister for Seniors for your continued support of the Ageing and Disability Commission.
We have made great progress, but we know there is more to do. I look forward to continuing to work with you all in the year ahead.
