Purpose of this training

The purpose of this training is to equip support staff, volunteers and community members with the skills to confidently and competently identify and respond to concerns of abuse, neglect and exploitation of an older person or adult with disability, specifically within the family, home and community and where it relates to the conduct of a family member, partner or informal carers and supports.

Who is this training for?

Module one has been created for frontline staff, volunteers and anyone else who may come into contact with older people or adults with disability in their home or community. This includes, but is not limited to:

• NDIS support workers
• Aged care workers
• Volunteers from organisations who visit homes, for example Meals-on-Wheels
• Personal care workers
• In-home library service volunteers
• Community nurses
• Pharmacists
• Community support workers
• Medical professionals
• Members of the community who provide services to older people and adults with disability (for example bank managers and hairdressers).

How to use the training

This training can be accessed on this website, and can be used across multiple devices included desktop computers, iPads or iPhones.

Module one has five key sections that you will be able to navigate through at your own pace. At the end of each section, you will return to the main menu. Follow the instructions and prompts on each slide to progress through the training.

Module one should take you approximately 15 minutes.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this training, you will be able to:

• identify the different types of abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people and adults with disability within the family, home and community
• develop strategies around how to have a conversation with an older person or adult with disability that you are concerned about
• explore the process of recording accurate information and record keeping
• have confidence in knowing when and how to talk with your manager or organisation about matters of concern
• identifying the appropriate internal and external parties to report to with your manager.

There are no prerequisites for this training module.

Certificate of completion

In order to ensure this training is accessible to everyone, this module sits outside of a learning management system (LMS). However, we recognise the importance of acknowledging the time and effort taken to complete. This certificate of completion can be downloaded (PDF, 52.7 KB) and signed at the discretion of managers and supervisors to demonstrate completion of this course by staff and volunteers.
